Meet Risk and Compliance Analyst, Sinéad Ross

Based in our Dublin office, Risk and Compliance Analyst Sinéad shares what brought her to the payments industry, and what it’s like to work at Fire.

Hey Sinéad, can you tell us when you joined Fire?

I joined in February 2024 and just marked my one-year anniversary this February.

Can you tell us about your role?

As a Risk and Compliance Analyst, I support the development and implementation of internal controls by drafting procedures and standards, conducting compliance testing, and helping to ensure regulatory obligations are met. I carry out a lot of the regulatory reporting and support ongoing risk management to strengthen Fire’s compliance framework.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

The opportunity to contribute to building a strong, transparent, and ethical business environment. I enjoy being part of a function that supports informed decision-making and continuous improvement for the business. It’s rewarding to see how the work we do can influence the business as a whole.

What has been the most significant challenge you’ve faced so far?

We’ve been working on improving our monthly compliance testing, which has been really interesting. It’s given me a chance to see how different teams work and how everything connects, which has been helpful in shaping the project and introducing a new approach to how we test.

Can you tell us about your background and what motivated you to join a company like Fire?

My background’s a bit of a mixed bag. I started with a psychology degree, then went on to do a master’s in business. After graduating, I worked at a car rental company, mainly focused on logistics and sales. I actually fell into FinCrime by accident while I was in Australia. I was working with Deloitte on a few projects as a reviewer and quality controller, and when someone I had worked with offered me a role in FinCrime, I thought it sounded really interesting and went for it.

When I returned home and was job hunting, the role at Fire really stood out to me. It brought together so many of the skills I’d picked up throughout my career, and I felt I could genuinely add value to the team. I was also drawn to the idea of joining a smaller team; it felt like a great challenge and a chance to learn and grow.

How would you describe the culture in three words?

Collaborative, fast-paced and friendly.

What do you enjoy most about working in the payments industry?

What I enjoy most about working in the sector is how fast-paced and constantly evolving it is. There’s always something new to learn, whether it’s technology, regulation, or customer needs.

And what about outside of work? How do you spend your spare time?

I’m a committee member of a community group back home, where we organise activities a couple of times a month, everything from hikes and sports days to board game nights. I love the outdoors, so it’s great to get people involved in something active and fun. If I’m not there, you’ll probably find me at a football or hurling match.

Any quirky skills or surprising fears we should know about?

I can make a shamrock shape with my tongue. ☘️
