Meet Onboarding Team Lead, Nathan Hughes
Nathan, Onboarding Team Lead in our Dublin office, sat down with us to share his experience working at Fire and what drew him to the payments industry.
Hello Nathan! Since when have you been with Fire?
I joined Fire back in September of 2022, currently celebrating my 2nd anniversary!
What are the key responsibilities of your role?
To surmise, it’s my job to ensure that customer applications are managed efficiently, from point of application to final decision. Onboarding is a great place to be as I get to work with most of our departments on a regular basis as part of the process.
What do you find most rewarding about your role and being a member of the operations team?
Operations is a dynamic team to work in, it’s easy to branch out and get involved in other initiatives and areas. Beyond that, the team are all a pleasure to work with in any capacity.
What has been the most exciting challenge you've worked on so far?
We’ve onboarded some interesting clients during my time, however, one of them involved Onboarding over 150 individual accounts! This was particularly interesting as it involved input from nearly every corner of the business to get over the line on time.
Can you tell us about your background and what attracted you to a company like Fire?
I’ve worked in the financial space for most of my career and have always enjoyed it, it’s an interesting and fast-moving area which keeps you engaged. My last job was with a global FX firm, so Onboarding there was a different beast all together. Finance wasn’t always the plan however, I originally went to college to study Psychology!
I was contacted by a former manager who asked if I wanted to interview for a role here, I’d always wanted to work at a smaller, more focused company, so it was the perfect fit.
Summarise the culture in three words!
Open, supportive, hardworking.
What do you enjoy most about working in the payments industry?
It moves fast and keeps you on your toes! Payments is an intrinsic part of just about everything these days, it’s exciting to be involved in that.
And outside of work, how do you like to spend your spare time?
I fancy myself a bit of an amateur chef, emphasis on the amateur, so I like trying out recipes I find online or in cookbooks (I’ve bought too many, so I have to justify it now). Beyond that, I play video games and Dungeons and Dragons in my spare time along with adding to my overstuffed bookshelf.
Do you have any unique or unusual skills or fears?
I can assemble a computer from scratch in about 20 minutes, not much of a party trick though sadly. Not too many fears, but I get a little unnerved in wide open spaces, so I’ll always be a city dweller, I think.
