Meet Backend Developer, Deepak Kumar Kesavan
Backend Developer Deepak is part of our Dublin team. We sat down with him to find out what it’s like to work at Fire and what brought him to the payments industry.
Hi Deepak! How long have you been with Fire?
I joined at the end of 2023, so it’s been about 1.5 years now.
Can you tell us about your role and what it involves?
I’m part of Fire’s development team in Dublin, where I focus on building and maintaining backend systems. My role involves estimating tasks, writing clean and efficient code, conducting code reviews, troubleshooting issues, and managing smooth releases. I work closely with my team to develop scalable and reliable solutions that enhance our payment services.
What do you find most rewarding about being a Backend Developer at Fire?
One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is knowing that the solutions I build directly contribute to seamless and secure transactions for businesses and users. Seeing my code power real-world payment flows is incredibly fulfilling. I also enjoy the problem-solving aspect – every challenge feels like a puzzle, and finding the most efficient solution keeps the work exciting. Plus, the collaborative environment at Fire makes every project a learning experience!
What’s the most exciting challenge you’ve tackled so far?
One of the most exciting challenges I’ve worked on was implementing Camunda Flow at Fire. This project involved streamlining complex business processes and automating workflows to enhance efficiency. It was a deep dive into process orchestration, and I enjoyed optimising workflows to ensure seamless execution. Seeing it successfully integrated and improve operations made it a highly rewarding experience!
Can you tell us about your background and what motivated you to join a company like Fire?
I completed my graduate programme in Engineering in India and started my career in the payments industry, gaining two years of experience at a payment provider company. Wanting to deepen my technical expertise, I pursued a master’s in software engineering at the University of Limerick, Ireland. After completing my studies, I worked as a developer for three years, further honing my backend development skills.
Joining Fire felt like a natural fit – having already worked in the payments industry, I was excited about the opportunity to contribute to an innovative company focused on financial technology. The chance to work on impactful projects, combined with Fire’s dynamic and collaborative environment, made it an easy choice for me.
Describe the company culture in three words.
Innovative, collaborative, empowering.
What do you enjoy most about working in the payments industry?
The payments industry is constantly evolving, and that’s what makes it so exciting. I love working on cutting-edge technologies that drive seamless and secure transactions. It’s rewarding to build solutions that have a real-world impact, making digital payments faster and more efficient for businesses and users. The industry’s fast-paced nature also means there’s always something new to learn, keeping my work both challenging and fulfilling.
What about outside of work? How do you spend your spare time?
Outside of work, I enjoy reading books, especially those that expand my knowledge and perspective. Whether it’s business, personal development, or fiction, I love diving into a good book and exploring new ideas. It’s a great way to unwind while continuously learning something new!
Do you have any unusual talents or interesting fears?
I have a fear of snakes! Back in India, where snakes are more common, I was always extra cautious in outdoor spaces. Even though I don’t come across them in Ireland, the fear still sticks with me – I’d rather admire them from a safe distance!
